Churches and religious sites from Greece

Since I already shared a taste of Greece for Foodie Friday, today I thought I would share the more spiritual side of our trip.

While we were staying in Athens we took a tour bus from our hotel to Corinth. This spot is where they would gather to hear politicians and speakers of news of the day. Paul first shared the good news of the gospels here and converted many to Christianity.

More ruins of Corinth.

The Church dedicated to St. Paul.

This beautiful mosiac was outside of one of the Greek Orthodox churches in Athens.

All the islands had small chapels - some were built for the fishermen to pray and give thanks each day -- this one was in Mykonos.

This picture is from the ruins of Ephesus, Turkey. Also where Paul preached and set up a church.

More pictures of the ruins.

Above the entry of the Holy Grotto of the Apocalypse where John wrote Revelations.

Some of the shields within a cross on the Street of the Knights in Rhodes.

Ruins of an early Church in Rhodes.

It was very inspiring to walk the paths of Paul and to see where the earliest Churches were formed I'll be posting more pictures of our trip soon.

See ya!

Foodie Friday - A taste of Greece

You'll probably think I'm nuts, but I took pictures of many of our meals during our trip to Greece. I always knew that I loved Greek food, but now that I've actually eaten authentic Greek food....I didn't even know how good it is! So, join me on the Greek food tour!

On our first day in Athens after we checked into our hotel, next on the agenda was lunch. We took the advise of the hotel clerk and walked around the corner to a delightful restaurant. It was so good, we went back several times. I ordered lemon chicken soup and a Greek salad.

Mr. Mid-Atlantic said these were the best stuffed grape leaves he's ever eaten. (And he's eaten a few!)

Most meals were accompanied with bread and often fresh lemon.

Another Greek salad -- as you will see, most contain no or very little lettuce.

Lot's of outdoor dining within walking distance of our hotel.

One evening we shared a grilled meat dish of chicken, beef, lamb, pork, veal and sausage.

This was the beef -- I almost didn't get a picture.

Another Greek salad. The feta cheese was so wonderful and creamy tasting and the olives were not like any I've ever had here in the states! I can't begin to tell you how wonderful their flavor was.

More stuffed grape leaves for Mr. Mid-Atlantic.

Yes, I ordered Greek salads at every meal I could! The dressing was simply drizzled olive oil and fresh herbs. They told us that they never use vinegar for their dressing.

These were spreads for the bread - as I recall one was an olive spread and I think the other was a roasted pepper spread.

When we ordered wine they would bring these half liter glass pitchers --- just enough for about 4 glasses. Most places would also leave a glass pitcher about twice this size with water -- it was nice to have it so available during the meal.

A Greek grilled sausage (mixture of minced beef and lamb) platter.

One of these was lamb and the other was veal -- I can't tell which was which.

Grilled lamb chops.

Usually there was not a huge dessert selection -- but almost always a fresh fruit platter was an option. Sometimes they would bring that after the meal without us even ordering it.

Wonderful cheeses.

Told you I ordered a lot of Greek salads....I wasn't kidding!

Mousakka - (I'm pretty sure I didn't spell that right -- I'll edit it later)

Spaghetti from Santorini.

And, of course, one last Greek salad!

I haven't stepped on the scales yet....not too sure I want to know...but it was worth every bite!

For more wonderful temptations, be sure to check out what everybody's bringing to the pot luck over at Gollums place -- "Designs by Gollum"

I'll be posting more pictures from our trip soon (the non-edible ones!)

See ya!

Tablescape Thursday at the frog pond.

UPDATE: We're back from a wonderful trip and I'll be posting soon. Between jetlag, an abundance of laundry, returning to work, attending VBS and the heat wave....I've not created a new tablescape. Since I didn't get the chance to link this one before our trip I will do that now. Can't wait to share some pictures and new table linens from our holiday -- see ya!

You all know how much I love Thursday, when we all get to visit Susan and join the tablescape party. This week however, I won't be visiting or linking. We'll be, as our English friends say, "Across the pond". (well actually waaaaaay across the pond - in Greece!) So today, we're having lunch with some of our froggy pond friends.

Welcome to the pond!

Here's a lilly pad set just for you! Let's see what's set on the table today.

Goblets found at Goodwill back in the fall. They're holding pretty pink and green napkins from Tuesday Morning. I have a two napkin rule - paper for the mouth, cloth for the lap.

I found these froggy salt and pepper shakers at an antique store named "Through The Garden Gate". It seems fitting to find frogs in the garden - don't you think so?

Here's another frog from Ben Franklin Craft store.

I folded my pink cloth napkins into "flowers" for the lilly pads. They've been put into my crystal votive holders and set on each plate. The plates came from Kroger this spring -- I thought they sort of looked like lilly pads.

Here's a frog hanging around the centerpiece.

Another flower fold -- no two came out exactly alike.

Another frog from Ben Franklin.

The centerpiece is set in a shallow footed crystal compote.

I found this at Goodwill and I think it's supposed to be a toothbrush holder -- but it makes a perfect "flower frog" today.

An overview of the gerber daisies.

An overview of the frog pond.

Time to light the candles.

The flatware "Treble Clef" is perfect for this whimsical table setting.

A tabletop view.

Just hanging on...

...for dear life!

Poor little fella!

I won't make the link up for the party this week at Susan's "Between Naps on the Porch" but be sure to hop on over to her porch and see what everybody's set on their table this week. You'll be glad you did.

See ya when we get back!
