Recent Treasures and a Birthday Gift.

My dear friend Jane gave me a gift certificate to Big Lots for my birthday -- it's always such fun to wander around picking and choosing. As a matter of fact, I must admit, I hadn't been in any of the Big Lots around here so it was a special treat. I looked at candles, towels, tablecloths, glasses, garden items, interesting food items and "spent" that gift certificate over and over. Three times I circled the store ... but kept ending back at the same isle... I ended up leaving with... you guessed it!

Gollum Dishes! Oh, I'm so easily influenced! *sigh* -- Thanks Jane - for a wonderful gift and your luncheon invitation's in the mail - so you'll get the chance to see and enjoy them too! They'll be making an appearance in an upcomong tablescape for my second "Granny" luncheon for several of us grandmothers at my church. We have some new grandmothers added to our list and some new grandchildren to celebrate as well.

I found this silver plated coffee server at a local antique and thrift store. I have seen this same sort of server on several tables for tablescaping. She needs a bit of polish, but I think will make an elegant presentation. I don't know much about these particular pieces - perhaps some of you could give me an idea of the age and history of these particular servers.

I was attracted to the intricate design at the neck and handle.

Check out these sexy legs too!

A couple of weeks ago I found this English pottery toast rack and thought it would be great fun to use to make up a breakfast tray when my daughter in law Megan and two granddaughters come for a visit in September. I would love to pamper them with breakfast in bed! I'll be on the look out for one of those wicker breakfast trays - won't this be fun for toast, juice and coffee? Well, milk for Stella Grace, I suppose.

This is the rose design on each end. I guess you can tell if you follow my blog how much I love roses.

This is the marking on the bottom.

This matches my favorite tea pot as well. I can also "see" toast and tea.

My final "treasure" is one I found about 6 weeks ago. I loved this set of china napkin rings with such dainly flowers. I'll be using these in an upcoming tablescape as well.

The pink flower had a nic on the lower left petal -- an easy fix with pink nail polish. Can't wait to set my table with these pretty "treasures" I hope that you've had some treasure filled days as well.

See ya!

Foodie Friday - Blackberry Wine Cake.

WARNING! Do NOT go to Foodie Friday at "Designs By Gollum" if you're on a diet! It will be very dangerous! But if you're up for it -- here's what I cooked up to bring to the table this week. Blackberry Wine Cake. I found this recipe when I was exploring blog sites and I just don't remember who to give credit to -- I also found it on one of the recipe sites as well.

Here's the "un-cut" picture of our cake. We had this as our finale for the 4th of July -- a good ending.

Here's the recipe:

1 box white cake mix
1 box blackberry jello - (I went to two stores and didn't find it -- after much pondering over using raspberry or black cherry...I went with the black cherry and it worked fine)
1/2 Cup oil
4 eggs
1 cup blackberry wine
1 cup chopped pecans (I actually used a little less than that)

preheat oven to 350 - grease and flour bundt pan. put chopped pecans in pan.
mix all the other ingrediants and pour into pan. Bake 45-60 minutes.

Glaze
3/4 c powdered sugar
1/4 c butter
1/2 c blackberry wine

melt butter - remove from heat - add sugar and wine - spoon over warm cake. This was very liquid, not really what I consider a glaze, but it did make for a very moist cake and I didn't use it all.

Of course, I didn't stop here. I "stewed" some fresh blackberries and we topped our cake with vanilla ice cream and the stewed berries -- nobody complained!

For more delightful temptations -- be sure to check out Foodie Friday over at "Designs By Gollum"!

Tablescape Thursday - Welcome Molly

I LOVE Tablescape Thursday! It seems like I "lurked" through TT (When it was Tablescape Tuesday) for months and it's what inspired me to start my own blog. Once I got my nerve up, I decided to take the plunge and participate and now there's no looking back! Thank you Susan, for providing us all so much fun each week - whether we're "just browsing" or we're full on participating. Be sure to check out all the tablescapes every week at "Between Naps On The Porch". You'll be amazed at what can be created with dishes and a little imagination.

This week's tablescape is all about honoring our four granddaughters and in celebration of our newest "grandgirl" Molly Rose, born on June 25th. You can see that there's lot's of pinkness on this tablescape. I've prepared the table for a fancy milk and cookies celebration at Nana's house. Of course it's all in my imagination since only one of the girls is actually old enough to enjoy this at this point. Perhaps in the not too distant future this will actually be possible. Nana can't wait for the fun of four little girls together!

This is a vintage tablecloth that I showed in June layered over a white tablecloth. This time I just used this small cloth by itself. The cloth has pink roses stenciled on the border and in the center. Picked because roses are the flower for June birthdays. (and they're pink of course!)

As I was putting the centerpiece together, this was sort of reminding me of a fountain. This starts out with a glass cake stand, topped with a small footed stand (I don't know what it's really supposed to be for - it just looks like a minature cake stand and belonged to my grandmother - I never remember her using it though). On top of that small stand, I have a cut glass salt celler turned upside down. All the facets of the glass look like water in a fountain to me. This all holds four Margaret Furlong angels from my collection that I started before she stopped production (I was really sad when that happened) - one angel for each girl. I've also filled in with petite pink roses on a vine and ivy vines. These were used to decorate an arbor for our daughter's outdoor wedding four years ago this month. I "shopped" my house for everything in this weeks tablescape.

This is my smallest angel in the collection - she's about 2 1/2 inches tall. She'll be Molly Rose's angel and because we're celebrating her birth - she gets the top spot in the centerpiece. She's holding a wreath of flowers. That also reminds me of Molly's June birthday -- a month filled with flowers from the garden.

The next two angels are a bit larger than the first one - maybe about an inch -- they'll be the one's representing our twin granddaughters. This angel will be for Kendall Bailee -- she's holding shells from the seashore. We all love the beach, so I imagine these girls will as well. This also reminds me that their birthday is in August, a summer month that often finds us by the water. (or longing to be.)

The next "twin" angel representing Keelyn Elizabeth is holding a dogwood blossom - that's the state flower for Virginia -- A reminder of their birthplace.

The last angel is about an inch larger than the last two -- this one represents our oldest granddaughter Stella Grace. She's holding a cross reminding me of the baptism of all our girls and that they are all beloved children of God.

On two corners of my centerpiece are sheer pink dotted swiss bows. They remind me of little girl dresses -- my mother loved dotted swiss and I remember having several dresses made of that when I was a little girl. I also think of the big sashes tied into pretty bows on the back of pretty little dresses.

Here's a little closer look at a cookies and milk place setting.

I found six of these little plates with pink roses this past spring at an antique store. All six cost $7.50. They'll make sweet little cookie plates. The mugs were four that I purchased when I was working at a Hallmark card and gift shop. They're based on the nursery rhyme. "Monday's Child is fair of face; Tuesday's Child is full of grace; Wednesday's Child will know no woe; Thursday's Child has far to go; Friday's Child is loving and giving; Saturday's Child works hard for a living; but the Child who's born on the Sabboth Day, is bonnie and blithe, happy and gay!" I purchased a Monday (my day of birth); a Saturday (our son's day of birth) and two Sunday's (my husband and daughter's day of birth). So quite naturally all our granddaughters were born on Tuesday or Thursday!

I thought the little plate and cup got a little lost on the full sized pink placemat. So I took a white battenburg lace napkin and folded it around the placemat to bring it into better scale.

I decided that Stella Grace will be using my mug. The inner rim says "Monday's Child".

"Is Fair of Face"

It also has a picture of an old fashioned camera. This is why I picked this mug for Stella Grace. She loves to pose for pictures and when we were in Atlanta a week ago, she was having fun taking pictures as well. Perhaps a budding photographer.

The victorian girl side of the mug shows her gazing in the mirror.

The middle part of the mug shows a little dog "posing". This looks exactly like our dog Clapton when he's begging.

The victorian little boy is taking a picture.

Since I had two Sunday mugs, these will be for Keelyn and Kendall. The little victorian girl is at the table with a crown on her head. What is she doing?...

...blowing out the candles of a birthday cake! The twins have a birthday coming up soon. They'll be one on August 7th. If you look in the very bottom right you'll see the little dog hoping to snag a piece of that cake!

Looks like the little victorian boy can't wait for a slice of cake either!

These mugs have a small birthday cupcake.

The inner rim says, "Sunday's Child"

"Is Happy and Gay"

Molly Rose will be using her daddy's mug. The little girl is potting some flowers in the garden.

Our little dog is napping.

Here comes our little boy wheeling his wheelbarrow.

The inner rim says, "Saturday's Child"

"Works Hard For A Living"

Connected by two little sunflowers. Certainly, I don't hope that Molly has to do hard work, but that she will love the work she does one day!

Here's an overview of our Milk and Cookies tablescape. I like the geometric design of the napkins and placemats.

One final overview look of the centerpiece of angels and flowers.

Be sure to check out all the other tablescapes this week at Susan's "Between Naps On The Porch" -- I'm certain that you'll find one or two that really strike your fancy!

See ya!

Foodie Friday - Lasagna

Foodie Friday is such a wonderful day of sharing fun recipes - hard on the diet though - oh well! Thanks Gollum at "Designs by Gollum" for hosting this every week -- I really look forward to it.

I guess everybody sort of has a "signature" dish. The one that gets requested at family gatherings. Mine is lasagna. This is what my son-in-law requested for his "cowboy" birthday and it's what I make for Christmas. I realize that usually the recipes I share and the quick and easy ones -- this one is not, but well worth the time and effort to make - I've tried several lasagna recipes, but we think that this one is the best by far.

Spinach Lasagna with Italian Sausage

1 pk. Italian sausage (I like the kind that is ground - it's usually a bit over a pound)
1 onion sliced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 c. olive oil
2 (15 oz) cans crushed tomatoes
1 (15 oz) can italian diced tomatoes
2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
2 (4 ox) cans tomato paste
4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp salt
1.2 tsp ground black pepper
1 bay leaf

Cheese filling:
1 - 16 oz container ricotta cheese or small curd cottage cheese
1 egg
1 - 10 oz package frozen spinach, cooked and drained well
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Topping:
3 cups mozarella cheese
1/4 cup parmesan cheese

cooked lasagna noodles, enough to make 3 layers in 13x9 baking dish.

The sauce can be made in a crock-pot

simmer onions and garlic in olive oil until clear.

Cook Italian sausage in separate pan on stove and drain. Once onions are cooked, add tomatoes, tomato paste and sauce, oregano, parsley, basil, salt, pepper, bay leaf and cooked Italian sausage. Stir until mixed.

to prepare filling:

add ricotta/cottage cheese, cooked drained spinach, parsley, egg, basil, pepper and parmesan cheese in bowl and mix well.

When ready to prepare lasagna:

Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sauce in bottom of 13X9 baking dish. cover with noodles. Cover noodles with 1/2 of the filling mixture and top with 1 cup of mozarella cheese.

Add 1 cup sauce. Repeat one more time. Add another layer of noodles, *remaining sauce and top with 1/4 cup extra parmesan cheese and the remaining mozerella cheese.
(*if you run short of meat sauce top with some tomato paste and sauce mixed together - most recipes don't call for sauce at this point, but this keeps the noodles soft)

Bake at 350 degrees covered with foil for 40 minutes.

Uncover and bake an additional 10-15 minutes or until cheese is lightly brown.

This is really good and so worth the time - trust me! What's your "signature" dish?

We're not having lasagna for the 4th -- I'm trying out a new recipe for Blackberry Wine Cake -- hopefully, I'll share that next "Foodie Friday" - be sure to check out what everybody else is cooking up over at "Designs By Gollum"

'til then --
See ya!

Tablescape Thursday - 4th of July

It's that wonderful time each week that Susan of "Between Naps On The Porch" invites everyone in blogland to dress their tables and share! I'm amazed week after week at all the lovely tablesettings out there. This week's sure to bring out the red, white and blue all across blogland. I know I'm ready! I love the 4th of July because it's a birthday party for each and every one of us in the USA. Old or young. Rich or poor. City or country -- we're all celebrating this great country.

Here we are approaching our patriotic table.

There's a whole lot of red, white and blue going on in this tablescape.

In the very center of it all we have Lady Liberty herself.

My old coffee pot serving up daisies and old glory.

Some of you are celebrating in big cities (like the most famous city in the USA - New York, New York). I found this metal statue of Liberty at a thrift shop last month.

Some are celebrating down on the farm. I've had this patriotic rooster for years.

A paper red and white checked napkin in each glass.

A navy cloth napkin embroidered with a star at each place setting.

My red salad plate and my white dinner/charger plate.

This square red, white and blue plate will be perfect for corn on the cob.

Another look at our 4th of July tablescape.

A final look by candlelight.

We're feeling especially grateful for our newest granddaughter celebrating her very first holiday! We were so blessed with a healthy child, after months of uncertainty with a difficult pregnancy and having been told that she would very likly have Down's Syndrome. We have been truly blessed and aware of how often we take for granted the miracle of healthy children.

Happy 4th everyone! Be sure to check out all the other tablescapes across blogland --

See ya!
